“Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!”

- Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Prominent Indian Independence Activist

5waraj is an organisation that has been advocating the concept of sustainability based on local practices. It has successfully conducted workshops which focus on the same among people from varied professions, age-groups and nationalities.

5waraj provides its participants with a platform to revisit ‘the modern development paradigm’ as we know it today, and confront hitherto hidden impacts of the paradigm with respect to local sustainable development.

Its workshop sessions take up each element of 5waraj (Dialects, Diet, Dress, Dwellings and Dances & songs - henceforth referred to as the ‘D’s) and address them one-at-a-time. 5waraj then brings these five ‘D’s together to highlight their interconnectedness and interrelatedness in a systems thinking manner.

The organisation looks at the impact that 5waraj is capable of having across the world along the three broad subdivisions of sustainable development - namely (i) social; (ii) economic; and (iii) ecological - and how best the participants can be stakeholders in taking 5waraj forward at the level of their zones-of-influence.
